Victory at Sea

Richard Rodgers wrote the score for this amazing documentary series that ran on NBC from October 26, 1952 until April 26, 1953. Henry Salomon oversaw the edition and compilation of nearly 60 million feet of actual newsreel. The footage came from 10 countries and 26 private and governmental agencies. In the early 1960's the series was also aired on Japanese television. Here's a clip from Episode 1.

Tom Hungate, KTNW and KWSU public television's Programming Manager said that he found the entire boxed set on sale for $5.00!

Hi there. Played the victory at sea piece in band many moons ago. Thought you might like to know, the romantic theme you mentioned ("Beneath the Southern Cross) became the song "No other love have I" from Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein's "Me and Juliet". Recorded by Perry Como in 1953.

Hi Robin,
Thanks for playing Victory at Sea, our family watched this show faithfully and I adore the music. Haven't heard it in years. You mentioned something about a part in the middle seeming so romantic. Well it was a popular romantic song,"No Other Love Have I" recorded by Perry Como. Gorgeous song and the lyrics are very much a world war II fit I just realized! You can check it out on Google.

Thanks for the tip on Perry Como's "No Other Love Have I." I'm guessing that I've heard that before but couldn't put two and two together!
